One night in November 1970, when David R. Stokes was fourteen years old, he answered the unmistakable call of God and committed his life to preach the gospel. This took place during a local church revival meeting. The speaker that night repeated a famous quote—one that has stayed with David down through the years:

“Expect Great Things from God; Attempt Great Things for God” - William Carey (1761-1834)

He’s been on this journey ever since.

Karen joined the journey on May 28, 1976. God blessed them with three daughters, Jennifer, Deborah, and Brenda. And then seven grandchildren came along: David, Karen, Ashton, Vinny, Grayson, Tiernan, and Sawyer.

David’s first Lead Pastorate was in Texas six months after his ordination in December of 1977. Since then David and Karen have led congregations in Ohio, Illinois, New York, and since 1998 in Northern Virginia—Expectation Church.

Along with his training and degrees from Bible College and Seminary, David has earned secular degrees in history and political science (M.A. Long Island University).

An avid reader, David has a personal library of more than 7,000 volumes. His writing is a natural extension of that passion. He’s the author of seven books, including a Wall Street Journal Best-Seller. He has also written two screenplays, which are currently under consideration for production in Hollywood and New York. The scope of his writing ranges from history, to Bible themes, to fiction.

But first and foremost, David is a preacher of the Word. A gifted communicator and storyteller, his speaking style combines in-depth Biblical exposition with history and currents, delivered with animation and a touch of humor.

Television commentator, Bob Beckel, describes it this way: “Here’s a preacher who can range from ancient history, to political history, to current events with ease.”
